This was an amazing story about a family that grew together from Kyle's marriage to Brynn and the birth of three kids and then difficulties began . Difficult pregnancy with 4th child and physical problems for Brynn brought on a series of events that tested Kyle's resolve to keep his family together. The title of the book "Please, God, Let Them be Amazing " was Kyle's prayer for each of the specialists that worked on his wife and premature baby son, Anthony. This was a story of a man who struggled with his wife about the possibility that their 4th child might die and after his birth then the possibility that his wife might die. God brought friends, family, nurses, specialists, new medical technology as His way of providing a miracle for this amazing family.
I've had a difficult time thinking of what I want to say to review this book. Having followed the Ervin family's situation of Facebook when it happened (the power of social networking!) I wasn't sure if the book would still have such a huge impact on me as the events did in real time. Boy, was I wrong. Kyle Ervin not only shares the horrific events that happened to his family, he takes the time to let the reader get to know him a bit, and the foundation of his and his wife's marriage. Thorough stories of how they met, to their wedding, and the sharing of their humerus annual Christmas letters, we got to know the Ervin family and better understand the impact of how this chain of events changed that dynamic forever. I have to say that there are times when I question my faith and the existence of miracels. Ervin's book has shown me that miracles do, indeed, happen. A wonderful book - will renew your faith and your appreciation for life.
This book was recommended to me by a family member, saying you have to read this, I did, it was hard to put down, and hard on my heart at the same time. It is very well written, it is a roller coaster ride of real life. Throughout this portion of his life, and constant prayer,"Please God Let them be amazing" He found the ultimate answer to prayer, There is only one Power, one Presence active in our lives and in the Universe, God the good Omnipotent, its the truth about God and The Truth about all of us. I loved the pictures in the book, Thanks for those images, I really liked the perspectives at the end. for a first book you hit it right out of the ballpark. I highly recommend reading this tribute to God, Love and Family and Friends.
Ervin’s love story is told so beautifully through the eyes of a desperate husband and father. I could not put it down. The epilogue with words from Brynn and her nurses was such a welcome joy. I fell in love with the Ervin family throughout the entire story.
Your eyes are welling up as you hold your breath as you burst out in laughter. Friends of my husband's youth, following the restrained sharing in social media as this journey unfolded I am content and awestruck by the "God moments".
As someone who also has suffered from a medical problem in the brain (tumor) that caused some difficulties, I found this book to be so engaging and fascinating that could not stop reading it! You feel like you are part of their family, going through it with them! The author is such a talented writer, both humorous and captivating. Highly recommend it for everyone.
I thought the book was excellent. Very well written. The fact that the book is based on reality and not fiction only makes it more amazing. That this is the author's first book is truly remarkable. I'd love to be on the Ervin Family's year end letter! The Ervins are a wonderful family.
Touching and well written!!! Kyle's style of writing is down to earth and relatable. I cried and laughed... Sometimes at the same time. It was like talking to a good friend. Loved it so much I bought 3 more as gifts. =} I hope to see more books written by Kyle Derek Ervin!!!
This book explores the highs and lows of a life-changing experience. Kyle Ervin slowly draws in his reader and allows them to feel the joy and pain of his adventure through this amazingly personal memoir. He pulls out all the stops in the most heartfelt (and even comical) ways.
This book was a great show of reality of what can really happen. It was a reality check. I liked this book because it showed me the truth about someone elses faith in God when in trials. I would def recommend this book together.
The tale of the Ervin family is nothing short of a Miracle. Mr. Ervin's words are graceful, funny, eloquent and emotional. This true story is a reminder of how thankful we should all be for even the littlest of things matter.
A real account of a family's experience when dealing with life and death issues. The husband relays his true feelings and thoughts as his wife and baby struggle for their life. God is still in control working in people's lives!
Sit down with your box of kleenex! Chapter 1 had me in tears. This book is a true story of angels and miracles! Ervin family you Rock, you are all so very Blessed!
A truly honest telling of this family's story with no sugar-coating. Well written and highly engaging. An inspiring book for any reader.
I highly recommend this book, it's a tear jerker but also very inspirational and funny! Love those Christmas letters. Easy read.
A must read, this is an amazing story. Don't have the words to describe what a wonderful story this is.
An extraordinary true story!
Kyle Ervin’s’ book, Dear God, Let Them Be Amazing, may make you reconsider the positive power of something outside us that is beyond our control. After giving birth to a son, the author’s wife had a massive pulmonary embolism and was void of oxygen to her brain for 95 minutes. Ervin takes the reader on a thrilling, edge-of-the-seat journey of hope, and a surgery focused on the talents of medical professionals. After meeting the author, his precious family, and learning of their experience, I was compelled to read this book. Not only will the reader realize the dark Valleys we may face before leaving this world, but will obtain a sense of security knowing we can eliminate Fear if we stare it in the eyes, if we learn and grow from our experience, and if we never lose our sense of humor along the way. “…though I believe in an all-powerful God, I do not believe that God causes bad things to happen. He may have created the world where bad things can happen, but that is where his involvement in it ends. Bad things (earthquakes, tsunamis, car accidents, pulmonary embolisms) are a cost of living. They are a part of being in this world that God created and are as unavoidable as all the good things in life.”- Kyle Ervin.
I don't read books. As much as I hate to admit that, I really don't. I can't even remember what or when the last book was that I finished. I like the idea of reading books more than the act of doing it. I believe that you can learn a lot from them, be it knowledge or creative ideas but yet I still don't read them. I don't really read magazines or newspapers either and sometimes I get bored half way through an article on the internet that I was very interested in reading. Having said that I finished the book "Please, God, Let Them be Amazing" in TWO DAYS!!!! Yes it is written by my friend Kyle Ervin and and no I'm not just saying it's an amazing book to try and convince you to buy his book. My personality is such that I'm not going to feed you some bullshit about how cool, awesome or great something is when I really think it sucks, I either won't say anything at all or if pressed for my opinion more than likely my reaction will be "Eh, it wasn't that great" or something much worse. This is why I would make a horrible salesman. When I used to work at Trader Joe's back in the 90's I would tell people to stay away from certain products because they were so bad. (Sorry Trader Joe's but you seem to be doing OK despite my steering customers away from some of your products.) Anyways back to the book. If the word "God" in the title of the book makes you hesitant or worried that this book is going to try and push religion on you or is going to try and convince you to believe in or convert you to a certain religion, I'm here to tell you that it doesn't. I'm Buddhist, albeit a somewhat non practicing Buddhist (for some reason a lot of people are shocked to find out that little piece of trivia about me, not so much the non practicing part but more so about the Buddhist part, or maybe it's that I'm associated with a religion of any kind period, especially with the kind of truck driver, sailor, wash your mouth out with soap language I use on a daily basis) and I didn't feel even a hint of religion being pushed on me at all. I would almost immediately be turned off by his book if that's all it was about and wouldn't be writing this review. I personally feel it is more of a love story than anything. A real, true life love story, not some made up fantasy bullshit that you only see in the movies or on a T.V show or read in a romance novel. This book may never make it to Oprah's book club (although that would be great if it did) but truthfully I don't really care, I'm glad I read this book and makes me love the Ervin family even more. If you are still reading this review 1) beyond his book I just read you've already read more than I usually do and 2) at this point you might as well buy the book and read it 🙂
I may be biased as I have been friends with the Ervins since Kyle was my boss (you know he's a great guy if he made me scrub toilets and I still like him) about 8 years ago, but I loved the book and I couldn't put it down. I found myself experiencing all of the emotions that I felt when Brynn was in the hospital over again. First of all, Kyle and Brynn are awesome, funny, loving, genuinely wonderful people. You will understand why Kyle fell in love with Brynn (and why everyone who meets her falls in love with Brynn), and you will be rooting for them the entire time. You will understand why everyone who found out about their situation was hoping, praying and wishing for the best possible outcome. You can tell that this book was written from the heart and is very truthful about the experience. Overall, it is inspiring and uplifting. Secondly, and because this book deals heavily with faith and religion, I feel that it should be noted that I am an Atheist. If I didn't know the Ervins, I may have skipped over this book for that reason, but I would urge other Atheists or Agnostics to reconsider. It's not preachy, and reminds me of all of the positive aspects of faith and religion. Lastly, this is a real life nonfiction fairy tale! Tragedy befalls a good family, there's a sleeping beauty, a child born with the odds against him, and it has a happy ending.
